SHRM Testifies on Compensatory Time at U.S. House Hearing
On Thursday, April 11, SHRM member Juanita Phillips of Huntsville, Ala., testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections in support of H.R. 1406, the Working Families Flexibility Act of 2013. In her prepared statement, Phillips shared that the proposed bill would promote workplace flexibility by allowing compensatory (comp) time in the private sector. [ More ]

House Passes Bill to Halt NLRB Activity
Earlier today, April 12, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SHRM-supported H.R. 1120, the Preventing Greater Uncertainty in Labor-Management Relations Act, by a vote of 219 to 209. The bill, sponsored by Rep. David Roe (R-TN), now moves on to the U.S. Senate. [ More ]

SHRM Argues Wisconsin State FMLA Law Pre-empted by ERISA
On March 25, 2013, SHRM filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Sherfel v. Newson. In the Sherfel case, SHRM asked the court to uphold the lower court’s decision finding that the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) pre-empts the leave substitution provision of the Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Act (WFMLA). New Social Security Administration Resources Become Available to the Public and HR
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a new online service, my Social Security, that allows people quick, secure access to their personal Social Security information. Employees can use my Social Security to obtain a Social Security Statement to check their earnings record and to see estimates of future retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
