Have you ever asked yourself, “Where did Congress ever come up with that idea? Have any of these legislators ever worked in the real world? Do they have any idea how this new requirement will impact the workplace?”
If you’ve ever wondered such things when administering one of the myriad of federal and state laws HR deals with on a daily basis, SHRM has a program that will allow you to get some answers – and possibly limit such questions about laws enacted in the future.
Entering its fourth year of a five-year rollout, the SHRM Advocacy Team (“A-Team”) provides former and/or current practicing HR professionals with a pathway to share insights directly with representatives in Congress (and even in the states). This initiative is designed to create a nationwide advocacy network of engaged SHRM members in each of the 438 congressional districts across the country. Comprised of both volunteer ‘Advocacy Captains’ and ‘HR Advocates,’ the A-Team serves as the face of HR by communicating with legislators and conducting in-person meetings on workplace public policy issues.
The target states for soliciting participation in the A-Team in 2013 are Alaska, Arizona, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina and Vermont.
Throughout the year, SHRM will be conducting information sessions (which qualify for recertification credit by the HR Certification Institute) in these and the other 31 states that have been rolled out since the program’s inception in 2010.
