What coffee houses were for networking professionals ten years ago, Facebook and Twitter may be today. On Wednesday, January 27, SHRM joined with SmartBrief and RecruitingBlogs.com to welcome HR professionals, recruiters and managers to a happy hour “Tweet-up” at a restaurant in downtown Washington D.C.
A “tweet-up” is a networking event where people who use Twitter come together to “meet up” in person. During a tweet-up, attendees often send messages through Twitter – known as “tweets” – to their network to share news, stories and any other information gleaned from their encounters.
Some HR professionals travelling hundreds of miles to participate in this event; those who were unable to attend the Tweet-up in Washington interacted with attendees through Twitter, where participants used the hashtag #connectHR.
SHRM's Chief Global Member Engagement Officer China Miner Gorman attended the HR Tweet-up and shared how she uses social media to increase HR's profile and influence.
Social media tools, such as Twitter, will be important components in SHRM’s new Grassroots Advocacy Initiative in 2010, so we encourage you to check out Twitter and start an account of your own. You can start by following SHRM “tweeters,” such as @ChinaGorman or @MichaelLayman (SHRM’s Manager of Labor Policy) or @SHRMPA (SHRM’s Public Affairs Department).
Watch for details on how you can participate in a Tweet-up event during SHRM’s Employment Law and Legislative Conference in March.
